Using the hub
Your account & password
Open your account menu (bottom of the left rail):
- Account — the Account section, for owners and admins. The Account section
- Report an issue — report a bug, or ask for a change or a feature, for owners and admins. Report an issue
- My Profile — your name, public profile, timezone and security settings.
Every time in the hub is shown in the timezone in your profile. It starts as your device’s, saved the first time you use the hub, and stays put when you travel; change it in My Profile → Settings.
- Change password — enter your current and a new password (8+ characters).
- Sign out — ends your session on this device.
- Help & documentation — this page.
Your photo
In My Profile → Profile, click your photo, or Upload photo beside it. The Profile photo window shows your current photo, or your initials if you have none:
- Choose a new photo — pick an image from your device; on a phone you can also take one. It is cut to a square from the centre, and the window shows the result before anything changes.
- Use this photo — puts it on your profile.
- Remove photo — goes back to your initials. Shown only when you have a photo.
- Cancel — closes the window and changes nothing. So do Esc and clicking outside it.
Then press Save changes: until you do, the new photo is not kept. Your photo is the one at the bottom of the left rail and on your public profile.
Your links
My Profile → Profile → Links holds up to six links, shown on your public profile: Website, ORCID, Google Scholar, X / Twitter, GitHub and LinkedIn.
- Each one is a full web address. If you type one without
https://, such asexample.com, it is added for you. - Website takes any site. The others take a link to their own site: ORCID an orcid.org link, Google Scholar a Google Scholar link, X / Twitter an x.com or twitter.com link, GitHub a github.com link, LinkedIn a linkedin.com link.
- A link that is not accepted is marked in red with the reason under it. Save changes saves nothing until it is fixed or cleared, and takes you to it.
- To remove a link, clear its field and press Save changes.
Staying signed in
While you use the hub, you stay signed in. After 60 minutes without a click, key press or scroll in any hub tab, a window asks Are you still there? and counts down 30 seconds:
- Continue — carry on where you were.
- Sign out — sign out now.
If the countdown reaches zero, you are signed out and taken to the sign-in page, which tells you why. Anything you saved is kept; sign in again to carry on. If your computer was asleep past that point, the hub goes straight to the sign-in page when you come back.
Every tab counts: working in one tab keeps the others signed in, Continue in one closes the window in all of them, and signing out in one signs out all of them.
Two-factor authentication
My Profile has a Security section with two controls: Change password, and a checkbox for two-factor authentication by email.
With it on, signing in asks for your password and then a six-digit code sent to your email. The code lasts ten minutes and you get three attempts.
Signing in with Continue with Google does not ask for this code: your Google account's own security protects that sign-in. See Signing in.
If a code does not arrive, check the inbox of the address you sign in with, then spam. Start the sign-in again to get a new one. Your account owner or an admin can send you a password reset, but nobody can bypass someone else's second factor.
