Sound & voiceover

A video has its voiceover, and any music or sound you add on audio tracks. Select an audio layer to set it up in Properties and in Effects → Sound.

The voiceover

The voiceover reads each scene’s line in the video’s voice. Choose the voice in Properties under Voice, and set its Speed and Volume. Effects → Sound → Delivery sets how it is read: As written, Warmer (a little slower and softer), Urgent (faster and louder), Calm (slower and quieter) or Announcer (a newsreader’s style, on the voices Joanna, Matthew, Amy and Lupe; on other voices it reads as written, a little louder). Delivery changes the timing too, and captions timed word by word follow it. The preview’s stand-in voice follows the change of pace.

The voice is recorded when you export, so a change to the script or the voice needs no extra step.

Music

A video made with Make a video starts with music: a track from the VeraGen music library that suits its template, how it should feel, or its tone, running the whole video on the Music track. You can choose a different track, or none, before it is made (♫ on Make a video, and Music on the storyboard), or at any time in the editor's Library tab:

  • Now playing shows the video's music. Change music… opens the Media Browser on Music, where the library's twelve tracks are listed, each with its mood: ▶ listens to one, and Use makes it the video's music, keeping the level and ducking you already set. Take out removes it.
  • Level sets how loud it is, and Slower, As made and Faster change its speed.
  • The music drops to a quarter of its level whenever the voiceover speaks, and fades in and out at the ends. Change either in Effects → Sound.
  • When scenes are added, removed or made longer, music that ran the whole video still runs the whole video.

Every track in the library was made by VeraGen and is free to use in any video, including ads and other commercial use, with no credit needed.

For more choice, the Media Browser's Music and Sound effects also search licensed music and sound effects from Storyblocks, and list sound files of your own. Stock media from Storyblocks

Make music with AI

In the Media Browser's Music, ✦ Make music for this video opens Make music with AI, which makes a track for this video: describe it (warm acoustic guitar, hopeful), and optionally start from one of the library's moods. It is instrumental and made to the video's length, and it becomes the video's music when it is ready, usually in about a minute. The price is shown before you ask, and only a track that is made is charged, under Video Studio; if making it stops part-way, it is marked as failed within a few minutes and nothing is charged. Each video's spending limit for AI work covers it too. The track is also saved in Media, so it can be used again in the project.

Sound effects

Library → Browse sound effects opens the Media Browser on Sound effects. VeraGen's fourteen are made by VeraGen and free to use like the music: Whoosh, Swish, Swipe, Riser, Impact, Bass drop, Click, Pop, Ding, Notification, Sparkle, Glitch, Camera and Typing.

  • Pick one and place it: it goes at the playhead, on the Effects track (or at the start of a scene).
  • On every cut (Library → On every cut → Choose a sound…, or C on a sound in the browser) puts the chosen effect on each change of scene, timed so that its loudest moment lands exactly as the new scene comes in. Any sound can go there: VeraGen's, one from Storyblocks, or your own file. Choosing another replaces them; Take them off removes them. The Product launch, Event promo and Social ad templates start with one on every cut.

Your own sound

Add an Audio layer from + Add layer, or drag a sound from Media onto an audio track. In Properties, set its Volume. In Effects → Sound:

Duck under the voiceThe sound drops (to 12% unless you move the slider) whenever the voiceover speaks, and comes back afterwards.
Fade in and outOne second at each end.
SpeedSlower, As recorded or Faster, keeping its pitch.

A sound plays for as long as its layer: shorten the layer and the sound stops there, in the preview and in the exported file. A layer longer than its file repeats it.

Hearing it in the preview

The speaker button beside the play controls turns preview sound on and off. With it on, music and sound effects play and the narration is read by your browser’s own voice, as a stand-in: the exported file uses the real voice, and its timing can differ slightly.

Preview silent? Check the speaker button is on. Some browsers stop the music to speak; when that happens the stand-in narration switches off and says so.
